TB and MMR-Varicella Titer Screening
For safety purposes, NMC members will not be permitted to do a home visit, shadow, or lead an in-person lactation class or support group without having TB test, along with MMR & Varicella titer test results, or proof of vaccination on file. Test results are to be sent to the Membership Chair.
As a counselor for NMC, the requirements for completion of training will put you in direct contact with parents and newborns who are particularly vulnerable to infection. There are common titer (aka immunity) tests required in healthcare and school/childcare settings to provide proof of immunity to certain diseases, and you may already have a record of these, or evidence of vaccination. Check to see if your insurance covers any of these, or you may also choose to get tested at a public health or walk-in clinic. Some are listed below.
Questions regarding these following requirements can be answered by your Training Coordinator, or email our Membership Chair.
NMC requires the following one time only, during the first 3 weeks of training and is given to your training coordinator or emailed to our Membership Chair:
TB test done, either skin test, or QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test
Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine (or evidence of immunity thru MMR titer test, within the past 20 years)
Varicella Immunization (or evidence of immunity thru titer test), within the past 20 years
NMC strongly recommends the following for counselors, if not medically contraindicated:
Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) booster within the past 9 years
COVID-19 Vaccine and Boosters, as recommended by the CDC
Seasonal Influenza (Flu) yearly during flu season
In order to protect our members and the families we serve, members must follow our Best Practice for In-Person Visits
If a member has a positive reading in a TB skin test:
It should be followed by either a new generation QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test,
OR a chest x-ray to assess the need for further medical management.
Once a member has a confirmed negative status with the QuantiFERON-TB Gold blood test, a normal chest x-ray, or has completed treatment for tuberculosis, she will be allowed to participate in NMC activities.
When you renew your membership as a volunteer counselor (full member) each year in August, we request that you notify NMC Membership Chair if, in the last 12 months:
You have traveled internationally
To your knowledge, have you been exposed to tuberculosis (TB)
You had any of the following symptoms for more than three weeks at a time? Persistent coughing, excessive sweating at night, coughing up blood, excessive weight loss or fatigue, persistent fever.
Depending on travel outside the U.S. or certain symptoms, we may require you to be retested.

Below is information on how to find clinics that offer inexpensive testing. You may also go in to your regular doctor, but you should check to see if your health insurance will cover the test or how much it will cost. You must return 48-72 hrs. (2-3 days) after having the skin test to be checked.
